When you order a paintable door, the edges are finished with Egger’s Painting Grade ABS Edging. This edging comes in a white base colour, designed to be painted with solvent-based or water-based paints.

They supplied us with precise measurements, and we custom-cut these traditional shaker cabinet doors from moisture-resistant MDF, ensuring they would arrive ready to paint. Painting MDF kitchen doors is a straightforward process that allows you to achieve a professional-looking finish. Whether you’re updating your kitchen on a budget or looking for a bespoke colour, following the right steps will ensure a smooth, durable result.

Prepare the Surface
Remove any dust, grease, or dirt from the doors using a damp cloth with mild detergent.
Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (120–180 grit) to smooth out any imperfections.
Wipe away sanding dust using a tack cloth or a damp microfibre cloth.

Apply Primer
MDF is highly absorbent, so applying a primer is essential to create a smooth base for painting.
Use a specialist MDF primer or a general-purpose wood primer. Apply a thin, even coat with a roller or brush.
Allow the primer to dry fully, following the manufacturer’s recommended drying time.

Sand & Prime Again
Once the first coat of primer is dry, lightly sand the surface again with fine sandpaper (180–240 grit) to remove any raised fibres.
Wipe away dust and apply a second coat of primer for the best coverage.

Apply Paint
Use a high-quality paint suitable for wood and cabinetry, such as satin, eggshell, or gloss.
Apply thin, even layers using a brush, roller, or spray gun for a professional finish.
Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next layer, lightly sanding between coats for a super-smooth result.

Finish & Reassemble
Once the final coat is completely dry, check for any imperfections and do any necessary touch-ups.
If desired, apply a clear protective topcoat for extra durability.
Reattach handles and hinges before reinstalling the doors.
