We offer different types of MDF sheets for various applications which can be cut to any size or shape using our CNC router for a high level of accuracy and the option of precise duplication. Whatever shape you have in mind, we can cut it – all you need to do is send us your drawings, in either CAD format or a sketch, and we can create it for you. In addition to cutting any shape or curve, our CNC router can be used for rebating, pocketing and hole cutting on MDF sheets, as well as virtually any other sheet material. Additionally, there is the option to add laser cutting and CNC engraving services, and mitred edges.
Using the latest in UV printing technology, we can print full sheets of MDF in one go for a consistent finish and a quick turnaround time. We currently only list 8x4 sheets (2440x1220mm) but we’re able to purchase and cut sheets of up to 2000x3000mm, so get in touch with our team today to discuss your requirements. With optional next day delivery, your products can be with you quickly. For larger orders, we have our own transport service which operates throughout most of the UK. And if you have a bigger ongoing project taking place, you can contact us to discuss bulk discounts and regular supply orders.
18mm MDF is a sturdy and resilient material that is well-suited to internal applications such as cupboards, shelving, general joinery and much more. Also known as medium density fibreboard, this material has an even-textured surface and provides a consistent finish when sanded as it is free from natural defects. 18mm MDF provides fantastic machining qualities and is thick enough to provide stability to any application. We provide custom cutting services for 18mm MDF sheets so you can purchase any size or shape you require for your project.
Types of 18mm MDF and Uses
There are several different varieties of MDF, depending on the application you’re using it for. Wood comes in a variety of grades we offer the grades listed below. See our wood grading guide for more information on the types available.
- Moisture resistant MDF can be used in areas of homes or businesses where moisture or humidity is an issue, such as bathrooms, kitchens or storage areas.
- Premier MDF sheeting is a high-quality material that makes use of superior wood refining technology and high-grade resins for greater consistency both in terms of thickness and quality. This form of MDF is best-suited to furniture, toys or cabinetry, delivering a reliable and uniform result.
- Fire rated MDF is commonly used in schools, hospitals, offices or cinemas and can provide up to 60 minutes of fire protection when used in applications such as doors, kick plates or partitions.
Advantages of 18mm MDF
MDF provides a host of benefits, primarily based around its brilliant strength to weight ratio which makes it easy to work with while also delivering stability and security. It’s a great base for a wide range of applications and is a cost-effective material, so it’s perfect for larger projects that require a lot of material. MDF is an easy wood to machine and can be cut with power tools and hand tools alike, as well as working well with glues, adhesives and screws without splintering for flexibility and convenience. One of the reasons 18mm MDF is used for so many diverse projects is that the method in which it is produced results in a smooth and consistent finish that won’t warp or crack, so it’s a stable material. It’s a common go-to material for prototyping as it’s affordable and can be machined quickly. If you need a material that's a bit stronger than MDF for structural, we recommend using plywood sheets.
In addition to its structural benefits, MDF is also an environmentally-friendly product that is produced from offcuts, sawdust and wood chippings. Different manufacturers include varying degrees of this reusable material but all MDF is considered to be a green and eco-friendly product that makes use of otherwise discarded materials, similar to OSB board. MDF boards have less expansion and contraction than natural woods too, so the dimensions for any given application remain stable. We also offer 15mm MDF and 22mm MDF.
Applications of 18mm MDF
MDF of this thickness can provide incredible strength and stability to a host of applications, from doors and shelves to wardrobes and bookcases. It can also be used for furniture and cabinetry, shop fittings, storage containers and for general internal joinery. MDF can only be used internally, but moisture-resistant-grade MDF can be used for environments where high levels of damp and humidity are an issue, such as kitchens or utility rooms. MDF has a smooth surface that can be cut down to size and sanded easily for versatility, as well as providing a clean surface for painting and staining.
