Details
Our flame retardant MDF sheets are well-suited for use in environments for extra fire protection to comply with building regulations. From schools, hospitals or offices, our fire-retardant MDF sheets will provide more time in the event of a fire, by slowing down the spread, and aiding escape.
Fire retardant MDF is suitable for internal dry situations, for non-structural applications, and ideal for use in wall linings, partitions, display panels, or in commercial buildings to slow the spread of fire.
Our flame retardant MDF is specifically designed to slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes, giving it the Euroclass C Fire Rating.
As an inexpensive option, flame retardant MDF is a popular and adaptable material that is made up of small strands of mixed hard and softwoods, combined with resins and wax to produce a hard-wearing but lightweight panel.
Additionally, our sheets take well to most adhesives and paints, so it’s great for customising for different projects, and it’s easy to fabricate and fix with screws, nails or glues. For more information on how best to utilise MDF in your next project, check out our guide for choosing the right MDF.
Features
Versatile
Flame retardant MDF is a popular and adaptable material that is made up of small strands of mixed hard and softwoods, combined with resins and wax to produce a hard-wearing but lightweight panel.
Lightweight
Due to the small strands that construct the sheet, our flame retardant MDF is ideal for use in environments where safety is key, as this sheet is light to install and fit.
Malleable
As our fire-rated MDF takes well to most adhesives and paints, this makes it an ideal solution for those looking to utilise the flame retardant properties, while maintaining a specific aesthetic.
Inexpensive
Compared to alternate forms of flameproofing, our flame retardant MDF provides an inexpensive solution for fire protection.
Customisable
Our fire-resistant MDF takes well to being machined and cut, meaning that we are able to customise your sheet to fit any spaces that you wish to flameproof.
Flame Retardant
With a slight pink tint, our flame retardant MDF sheets are Euroclass C grade, giving you up to 30 minutes of flame retardant properties. Please note that should you consider coating your sheet in paint, you should check that the coating will not adversely affect the flame retardant properties.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is fire-rated MDF?
Fire-rated MDF is a medium-density fiberboard product that has been treated with fire-retardant chemicals to achieve a flame spread rating. This makes it more resistant to catching fire and slowing the spread of flames.
What are the benefits of using fire-rated MDF?
The main benefits are increased fire safety and meeting building code requirements for projects like commercial buildings, schools, hospitals etc. The fire retardant treatment provides an added layer of fire protection.
Does fire-rated MDF look different from regular MDF?
Generally, fire-rated MDF has a similar smooth sanded surface and finish as regular MDF. Our flame-rated MDF is slightly darker in colour to our standard MDF boards.
Is MDF fire-resistant?
Our flame retardant MDF are non-loading bearing sheets with improved properties at resisting fire spreading. Our boards have a C fire rating and can slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes.
Is MDF more flammable than wood?
MDF is flammable but difficult to ignite. Flame retardant MDF also slows the spread of the fire. Dust from wood may ignite at temperatures greater than 204ºC and when in a high concentration in the air may spontaneously explode.
Can fire-rated MDF be stained or painted?
Yes, fire-retardant MDF can be stained, painted, laminated, wrapped, etc. just like standard MDF. The fire retardant treatment will not interfere with finishes.
Does the fire rating last forever?
The fire retardant penetrates throughout the panel, providing inherent fire resistance as long as the MDF is intact. However, any cuts, drilling or damage would impact the rating in that spot.
What thickness options are available?
We offer fire-rated MDF in 12mm and 18mm thicknesses.
