We offer different varieties of MDF for various applications which we can cut to size or shape using our CNC router for a high level of precision and the option of duplication. Whatever shape you have in mind, we can cut it. Just send us your drawings, in either CAD format or a sketch, and we can create it for you to your exact specifications. Our CNC router can also be used for rebating, pocketing and hole cutting on MDF sheets, as well as virtually any other sheet material. Additionally, there is the option to add laser cutting, CNC engraving services and mitred edges.
Using state-of-the-art UV printers, we can print full wood sheets in one go, providing a consistent finish and a much faster turnaround time than painting. We currently only list 8x4 sheets (2440x1220mm) but we’re able to purchase and cut sheets of up to 2000x3000mm, so get in touch with our team today to discuss your requirements. With optional next day delivery, your products can be with you fast. For larger orders, we have our own transport service which operates throughout most of the UK. If you have a bigger ongoing project taking place, you can contact us to discuss bulk discounts and regular supply orders.
3mm MDF, also known as medium density fibre board, particle board is incredibly popular for a host of different applications, from cabinets to shelves. It’s a commonly used material for flat-pack furniture such as bookcases, wardrobes and storage containers, as it’s lightweight but strong. It also provides a clean finish with no grains or knots and has a smooth surface that’s ideally suited to paints or veneers. MDF is an affordable material that makes for a great base to a wide range of projects and it’s easy to work with, delivering a great strength to weight ratio at a cost-effective price. We provide a custom cutting service for your 3mm MDF sheeting, so whatever shape or size you require for your project, we can deliver the exact product you need. We offer various sizes of MDF sheets online with our most popular being 12mm MDF sheets and 18mm MDF sheets, cut to size or shape.
Types of MDF
There are several different varieties of MDF, depending on the application you’re using it for.
- Moisture resistant MDF can be used in areas of homes or businesses where moisture or humidity is an issue, such as bathrooms, kitchens or storage areas.
- Premier MDF sheeting is a high-quality material that makes use of superior wood refining technology and high-grade resins for greater consistency both in terms of thickness and quality. This form of MDF is best-suited to furniture, toys or cabinetry, delivering a reliable and uniform result.
- Fire retardant MDF is commonly used in schools, hospitals, offices or cinemas and can provide up to 60 minutes of fire protection when used in applications such as doors, kick plates or partitions.
Advantages of 3mm MDF
MDF has a host of benefits and advantages, from the ease of machining this wood to the fact that it takes well to most paints and adhesives for added convenience. In particular, it works well with varnishes and oil or water-based paints. 3mm MDF is light and easy to manoeuvre, even in larger panels, and the light surface makes it easy to make marks when using it for larger and more complex projects. MDF also works with numerous fixing options, from glues and adhesives to screws and nails, without splitting or cracking. The manner in which MDF is produced means that it provides a smooth finish when sanding for a safe final product that won’t splinter or crack, which is one of the reasons why it’s so popular for use with items such as furniture, cupboards and shelves. It can also be used to great effect for table tops as it is an excellent substrate for veneers. Because of the easy machinability of MDF and the fact that it can be laser cut or machined by hand so quickly, it’s a common go-to for prototyping as it’s affordable while also being easy to work with.
Despite being lightweight, MDF is surprisingly strong thanks to its dense fibre body, so it will hold its form when fixed securely for a stable final product. This material has the added bonus of being an environmentally-friendly product as it’s made from recycled offcuts, sawdust and wood chippings, as well as from trees that are otherwise unsuitable for other uses. For this reason, it’s considered a green product that makes use of materials that would typically go to waste, similar to OSB board. MDF is free from natural defects and provides superior hold for screws and fasteners, so it’s great for applications that need to be fixed into place such as cabinetry. This material should only be used for internal applications and providing it doesn’t come into contact with water or excessive humidity, it will hold its form for a long period in any way that it’s used. There’s less expansion and contraction with MDF than with natural wood, so the dimensions remain stable.
Applications of 3mm MDF Sheets
At 3mm in thickness, this variety of MDF can be used for a host of projects, from architectural mouldings to furniture and shelving. While this product can only be used internally, that doesn’t limit the number of projects it can be utilised with. It is commonly used for panelling and shop fittings, as well as cabinets, wardrobes and bookcases. The 3mm MDF sheeting is also ideally suited to fun projects such as dolls houses and jigsaws, as well as for boxing in pipes and wiring or panelling. The smoothness of MDF means that it can be sanded down easily for safe and jagged-free edges, providing a cleaner and more professional finish and a smooth surface for painting.
