What is HDPE sheet used for?

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics. Its combination of toughness, chemical resistance, and a naturally low-friction surface makes it suitable for a huge range of applications — from cutting boards and food processing equipment to marine components, chemical tank liners, wear strips, conveyor guides, and workshop jigs. It's a go-to material whenever you need something tough, hygienic, and easy to machine.

How thick should my HDPE sheet be?

The right thickness depends on your application. Here are some common uses by thickness range:

For light liners, covers, and splash guards: 1.5–3mm

For general fabrication, panels, and enclosures: 4–6mm

For tanks, structural parts, and marine components: 8–12mm

For heavy wear pads, machined blocks, and thick plate: 15–50mm

If you're unsure, err on the side of slightly thicker — HDPE is easy to machine down but cannot be added to.

Is HDPE food safe?

Yes. HDPE is compliant with UK and EU food contact regulations and is one of the most widely used plastics in food processing environments. It is non-toxic, odourless, and does not leach chemicals into food or liquids. It is commonly used for cutting boards, food preparation surfaces, and hygienic liners. Natural HDPE is the standard choice for food contact applications.

Can I have features added to my HDPE sheet?

Yes. As well as cutting your HDPE to size, we can add a range of features at the time of order. Currently available on HDPE sheets: drilled holes, cut-outs, and rounded corners. Simply configure what you need in our online tool and we'll cut and machine your sheet to your exact specification.

Can I cut or drill HDPE myself?

Yes. HDPE is one of the more DIY-friendly engineering plastics. It can be cut with a circular saw, jigsaw, or hand saw using a fine-toothed blade, and drilled with standard HSS drill bits at moderate speed. Use a slow to medium feed rate and let the tool do the work — forcing it generates heat that can cause the material to melt and clog the blade. For precision cuts, complex shapes, holes, or cut-outs, ordering it cut to size from us is much faster and more accurate.

Is HDPE resistant to chemicals and weathering?

HDPE has excellent resistance to most acids, alkalis, alcohols, and many solvents, making it a reliable choice for chemical handling environments. It also performs well outdoors — it does not absorb moisture and is unaffected by most weathering. Black HDPE, with its carbon black content, offers better UV stability than natural HDPE and is the preferred grade for prolonged outdoor exposure. HDPE is not suitable for use with strong oxidising acids or aromatic hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures.

Ahem... I realise I had made an embarrassing, some might say schoolboy error, in reaching my first review. In fairness, I did praise the quality of the acrylic, the precision of the measurements and cuts as well as the excellent packaging and delivery. What I described as a deal-breaker was that I ordered clear acrylic, but only after plastic welding the edges did I realise it was blue-tinted. I *thought* I had removed all protective films and double-checked for any obvious trace of a second 'skin', even picking at the edges with a knife, to no effect. To the positive comments above, I can now also add that Cut My's customer focus post-sale is first class. I received a couple of messages after my review, politely checking on whether I was sure of the blue tints. Tanya: thank you. You were absolutely right and I feel like an ape-fingered buffoon. To alleviate my shame a wee bit, the final protective film is applied in such a way as to be indistinguishable from the perspex beneath. i.e. no bubbles, no peeling, uniform transparency etc. But it does yield if you persist, and thereafter it comes off pretty easily. So, a word to the wise. Ensure all the film is off BEFORE applying plastic weld. And before writing a misguided review! Because this is an excellent product and, from what I have experienced, a really decent, efficient company. I'll certainly be back.
