Measuring, fixing and finishing your replacement cupboard shelf. If your question isn't here, our Help Centre is open 24/7.

How do I measure for a replacement cupboard shelf?

Measure the internal width of the cupboard — the gap between the two side panels, not the outside of the unit. Do it at the front, the middle and the back, and use the smallest of the three. Then measure the depth from the inside of the back panel to the back of the closed door. Take 2–3mm off your width so the shelf drops in without fighting the sides, and 10–20mm off the depth so it clears the door and hinges. If you're replacing a shelf you still have, measure that instead — it's already the right size.

Why take a couple of millimetres off the width?

Because a shelf cut to the exact internal measurement has nowhere to go. Units are rarely perfectly square, and a shelf that needs persuading in is a shelf you'll damage getting it out again.

Good to know

2–3mm of clearance is invisible once the shelf is sitting on its supports.

What are the standard kitchen cupboard shelf sizes?

There's no single standard, but most UK units follow the same logic: internal width is the unit width minus two 18mm sides. These are the usual results — always measure to confirm, especially on older or handmade kitchens.

Base units are typically 560–570mm deep, so a 490mm shelf clears the door and hinges comfortably. Wall units are typically 300mm deep, giving a 280mm shelf. Corner units, larders and appliance housings vary far more — measure those.

How do I fix the shelf in place?

Most cupboards already have the fixings: either 5mm shelf pins pushed into 5mm holes drilled in the side panels, or plastic shelf studs. Look for two holes on each side at the height you want. If the holes are there, you just need four pins and the shelf sits on top. If there are no holes, you can either drill them (5mm bit, depth-stopped so you don't go through the side — units are usually drilled at 32mm centres) or fit shelf strips or L-brackets to the side panels instead. For a shelf carrying real weight, pins with a locking peg stop it lifting.

Do you supply shelf supports?

Yes — we stock shelf brackets, so you can add them to your order alongside the shelf. They're not included as standard because most people are replacing into a cupboard that already has its pins or studs. If yours has the holes, you only need four pins; if it doesn't, brackets fixed to the side panels do the job without drilling a whole row of holes.

Do I need edge banding?

Not structurally. Inside a closed cupboard, unbanded edges are fine and plenty of people leave them. Band the front edge if the shelf is visible, if the cupboard gets damp, or if you want it to look like it came with the kitchen. It's the single thing that most changes how finished the shelf looks.

How wide can a shelf be before it sags?

18mm board carrying a normal cupboard load is comfortable up to around 800mm between supports. Past that, deflection starts to show over time - and it's permanent, so a shelf that's bowed doesn't recover. For anything wider, either add a centre support, fit a batten along the back edge, or go up to 25mm. Larder and pantry units are the usual culprits, since they're both the widest and the most heavily loaded.

Can I use these in a bathroom, utility or under the sink?

For general use, yes - the faces are sealed and wipe clean. Under a sink, band the edges and keep an eye on leaks: it's the exposed cut edge that absorbs water, not the face. No board of this type is waterproof, and standing water will damage any of them.

Will the finish match my existing cupboard exactly?

If your unit is from a mainstream UK supplier, an MFC decor will get you very close, because it's the same class of board. Exact matching is harder than it sounds — decors get discontinued, and boards fade slightly with light over years. Order a sample and hold it against the inside of the door, where nothing's faded, before committing.

Can you cut a notch or a cutout?

Yes — add a cutout using the configurator above. We can't edge-band the inside of a cutout, and internal corners get a small radius rather than a sharp point.
