This creative KALLAX transformation shows how simple MDF detailing can instantly elevate a flat-pack shelving unit into feature storage.
For this project, @handmadehome_durham customised a standard KALLAX by adding soft arched details cut to her exact measurements from 18mm moisture-resistant MDF, instantly giving the unit a more bespoke, built-in feel. The arches were fixed in place using a strong grab adhesive and brad nails, with caulk used to smooth the joins for a seamless finish.
Once primed, the entire unit was painted in Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, creating a rich, timeless look that works beautifully in a living space. A final seal with furniture wax added durability while enhancing the depth of colour.
This project is a great example of how cut-to-size MDF panels can be used to elevate IKEA furniture, adding character and architectural detail without compromising on storage or practicality.
Why this hack works:
Custom arches soften the boxy KALLAX shape
Moisture-resistant MDF is easy to prime, paint and finish
Bespoke details make flat-pack furniture feel high-end
This IKEA HAVSTA media wall creates a focal point for the living room, combining storage with an integrated TV unit. With some clever planning, this project by @the_robinsonfamily_abode shows how custom finishes can turn standard furniture into something that feels truly fitted. By combining IKEA HAVSTA units with made-to-measure V-groove panelling, Vicky achieved a clean, cohesive living room focal point with plenty of hidden storage.
The main structure was created using five HAVSTA base cupboards, forming a solid run of cabinetry beneath the TV and offering generous closed storage. Additional HAVSTA shelving units were used to help frame the layout and give the wall its architectural shape.
To refine the look, V-groove MDF panelling cut to exact measurements was installed across the wall. The panelling was then primed and painted in a soft sage green, helping everything blend seamlessly and giving the units a calm, timeless finish.
Thoughtful finishes can completely change the feel of off-the-shelf furniture. If you’re planning your own IKEA media wall or fitted storage idea, custom-cut wall panelling can help you achieve a tailored result that works for your space.
This IKEA BESTÅ dining room project shows how modular units can be adapted into fitted furniture for social spaces.
Transforming IKEA furniture into a bespoke fitted finish is one of the most popular DIY projects right now, and this IKEA Besta hack is a perfect example of how cut-to-size MDF can completely elevate flat-pack pieces. @edwardian_property_parade wanted fitted storage in the dining room alcoves, but without the high cost of fully bespoke joinery. By combining affordable IKEA Besta units with made-to-measure MDF panels, she created beautiful alcove built-ins that look seamless and custom-made.
Once the Besta cabinets were assembled, she used our cut-to-size MDF sheets to box in the sides, add a top panel, and create clean infills for that fitted, wall-to-wall look. After sanding, filling and caulking the MDF, the whole unit was primed and finished in Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year 2025 – Cinnamon Slate, a warm blend of heathered plum and velvety brown that ties the space together perfectly. The end result is a budget-friendly entertaining space that looks completely bespoke.
What We Supplied:
Unlike statement furniture pieces, this IKEA BESTÅ hack focuses on practical, concealed storage for everyday living.
In collaboration with @belgravehome, this IKEA BESTÅ hack shows how modular storage can be transformed into a seamless, integrated design without the cost of bespoke joinery. Designed to span a full 5-metre wall, the BESTÅ units provide generous hidden toy storage while blending effortlessly into the living space.
To elevate the IKEA base units, custom fronts were professionally spray-painted to match the walls, creating a clean, minimal finish. The cabinets were then topped with a cut-to-size oak veneered tabletop, adding warmth, texture and a high-end feel that helps the unit read as fully bespoke.
This project is a great example of how combining IKEA furniture with made-to-measure elements can deliver a custom look at a fraction of the cost — perfect for family homes that need practical storage without compromising on style.
This space-saving PAX wardrobe adaptation brings custom storage to an awkward hallway. The IKEA PAX wardrobe is one of the most popular starting points for IKEA hacks — and this hallway transformation by @sunnysideofourstreet shows just how effective it can be when paired with our custom cut MDF.
Faced with an exposed electric box, limited coat storage and a growing shoe pile, Kerry used two PAX carcasses positioned on either side of the hallway to create a balanced, practical storage solution.
To give the units a fitted feel, MDF sheets cut to size were added as wall and wardrobe panelling. Each panel was measured and cut to fit precisely, including around sockets, switches and the existing electric box, helping achieve a clean, seamless result with minimal on-site cutting.
This transformation turns a previously awkward hallway into a practical, clutter-free space, with hidden storage for the electric box, dedicated areas for coats and shoes, and a cohesive panelling finish throughout.
Shaker-style detailing is also a popular way to repurpose PAX units. Our DIY guide explains how to create shaker wardrobe doors using cut-to-size MDF strips.
Not all IKEA hacks need to be large-scale. This detail-led IKEA bedside hack uses fluted panelling to create a premium look, adding subtle texture while maintaining the unit's structure.
In this project, Sophie (@my_eclectic_home_designs) gave her IKEA bedside cabinets a stylish upcycle using our custom-cut mini fluted panelling, proving how effective decorative panelling can be for refreshing flat-pack furniture.
The fluted panels were cut to size to fit the drawer fronts precisely, making installation straightforward while ensuring the vertical grooves aligned neatly across the cabinet. After lightly sanding and priming the MDF with Zinsser, the panels were finished in Dulux Perfect Oyster, creating a soft, modern look that elevates the original IKEA cabinets without replacing them. This IKEA upcycle is a great example of how textured detail can be used on IKEA furniture to achieve a bespoke, high-end finish with minimal changes.
"I attached mini fluted panelling, kindly gifted from Cut My, with its gorgeous scalloped grooves, to the fronts of the drawers. Each panel was cut to size and to my desired specifications to ensure they aligned perfectly."
These IKEA hacks show how combining flat-pack furniture with cut-to-size materials can completely change the final result. Whether you’re building a media wall, upgrading storage or adding decorative detail, custom MDF and panelling allow you to tailor IKEA designs to your space — without the cost of full bespoke joinery.
