Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of plywood do I need?

When deciding on the appropriate hardwood plywood thickness, consider the specific application to ensure optimal performance.

  • For intricate crafts and hobby projects, a thinner option, such as 4mm plywood, is well-suited.
  • If you're working on cabinet backs, a 6mm plywood sheet provides the necessary stability.
  • For furniture construction and shelving projects, opt for either 9mm or 12mm plywood, depending on the specific load-bearing requirements.
  • When durability is paramount, especially in applications like flooring, subfloors, or heavy-duty uses, it is advisable to select a sturdier option such as 18mm plywood.

Is marine plywood waterproof?

Marine plywood is not waterproof, however, it has a negligible core gap so that the likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers is minimised. This provides a strong and stable glue bond for extra strength.

How is marine plywood different from regular plywood?

Compared to standard plywood, marine plywood uses higher quality wood, more layers, has a more durable adhesive, and is designed to resist delaminating and warping when exposed to moisture over time. Regular plywood is not suitable for prolonged wet conditions.

What is the best way to seal marine plywood?

Since marine plywood is typically used around or in water, you’ll need to treat every surface of the wood with sealant. You can find a good waterproof penetrating epoxy to be ideal as it works deep into the wood, dries transparent, and requires less maintenance than other types of sealant.

Do you need marine-grade plywood?

We recommend marine-grade plywood around any instance where your sheet is going to be near water.

How long does marine plywood last?

When properly maintained, marine plywood can last over 25 years even with constant water exposure. Also, proper sealing and painting helps to extend its lifespan.

Is marine plywood treated with chemicals?

No, marine plywood is not chemically treated. It achieves its water resistance through the use of durable face and core veneers, resistant adhesives, and multiple laminated layers.

I was ripped off on this product as I was sent a sample and charged 35.00 and have had no refund even though I contacted them and asked for a refund, my local wood merchants would have given this for free, plus they charged me 9.95 for deliver sent it by a courier instead of putting in the post, at a time where people are struggling myself included, I had to save to spend 35.00 and they just took it for this piece of wood shocking!!!

Awesome wood. High quality however sometimes feels a little pricey. Appreciate that the cost of ply has increased recently due to an unstable world economy and regional conflicts but still eats at the wallet a little.
