Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Shinnoki for shelves instead of standard veneered MDF?
Standard veneered MDF arrives unfinished and usually needs extra sanding and lacquering (added time and cost). Shinnoki boards are a premium option: real-wood veneer that’s factory-finished in a durable matt lacquer, so your shelves are ready to install straight away with a consistent, professional look.
Are Shinnoki boards strong enough for shelving?
Yes. Shinnoki uses a high-quality MDF core for stability, making it ideal for shelves that stay flat and true. As with any shelf, final load capacity depends on bracket type, fixing method, wall construction, and span between supports—use suitable brackets and fixings for your wall and spread supports appropriately.
Do I need to sand, stain or lacquer Shinnoki shelves?
No. Shinnoki is pre-finished with a tough matt lacquer. There’s no sanding, staining or varnishing required—just cut, edge (if desired) and fit.
What thickness should I pick for shelves?
Most customers choose 19 mm for a sturdy, premium feel. Thinner shelves can be used for shorter spans or lighter loads. Always match shelf thickness to the span, load and bracket specification you plan to use.
Can Shinnoki shelves be cut and drilled like MDF?
Yes. Use sharp carbide blades/bits and support the piece well when cutting to protect the veneer edge. Pre-drill clean pilot holes for bracket screws and avoid overtightening to preserve the lacquered surface.
How do I finish the cut edges?
Apply matching edge banding for a seamless look (or choose a contrasting edge as a design feature). Edge tape also protects the core and gives a more durable, wipe-clean finish for shelves.
What brackets or fixings should I use?
Shinnoki shelves work with most quality shelf brackets. Choose fixings rated for your intended load and wall type (brick, concrete, timber stud, etc.), follow the bracket manufacturer’s instructions, and keep bracket spacing tight on longer spans to reduce deflection.
How do I clean and maintain Shinnoki shelves?
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild soapy water if needed. Avoid abrasives, scouring pads, and harsh solvents which can dull the matt lacquer. Use coasters or felt pads under heavy or rough items to protect the surface.
Are Shinnoki shelves environmentally friendly?
Yes. Shinnoki uses responsibly sourced wood veneers on an efficient MDF core, finished with low-VOC, water-based lacquers. Production is powered in part by on-site wind turbines, so you get a premium look with a lighter footprint.
Do Shinnoki shelves come with edging?
Yes, you can choose a matching edge for a seamless effect or a contrasting edge for a design accent.
Do colours look the same in real life as on screen?
Screens vary. For best results, order a sample to view the real grain and colour in your space and lighting before ordering full shelves.
Can I use Shinnoki shelves in kitchens, bathrooms, or outdoors?
Shinnoki is designed for indoor use. Shelves are fine in general living spaces but we don’t recommend horizontal use in wet or high-humidity zones (e.g., directly above sinks, in bathrooms, or outdoors) as prolonged moisture can affect the finish over time.
