Painting MDF kitchen doors is a straightforward process that allows you to achieve a professional-looking finish. Whether you’re updating your kitchen on a budget or looking for a bespoke colour, following the right steps will ensure a smooth, durable result.

What You'll Need

MDF primer (water-based or solvent-based)
High-quality paint (satin, eggshell, or gloss)
Fine sandpaper (120–240 grit)
Tack cloth or damp microfibre cloth
Paintbrush, roller, or spray gun
Dust sheet or newspaper
Masking tape

Step by Step Guide to Painting MDF Kitchen Doors

Prepare the Surface

Remove any dust, grease, or dirt from the doors using a damp cloth with mild detergent.

Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (120–180 grit) to smooth out any imperfections.

Wipe away sanding dust using a tack cloth or a damp microfibre cloth.

Apply Primer

MDF is highly absorbent, so applying a primer is essential to create a smooth base for painting.

Use a specialist MDF primer or a general-purpose wood primer. Apply a thin, even coat with a roller or brush.

Allow the primer to dry fully, following the manufacturer’s recommended drying time.

Sand & Prime Again

Once the first coat of primer is dry, lightly sand the surface again with fine sandpaper (180–240 grit) to remove any raised fibres.

Wipe away dust and apply a second coat of primer for the best coverage.

Apply Paint

Use a high-quality paint suitable for wood and cabinetry, such as satin, eggshell, or gloss.

Apply thin, even layers using a brush, roller, or spray gun for a professional finish.

Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next layer, lightly sanding between coats for a super-smooth result.

Finish & Reassemble

Once the final coat is completely dry, check for any imperfections and do any necessary touch-ups.

If desired, apply a clear protective topcoat for extra durability.

Reattach handles and hinges before reinstalling the doors.

First order arrived very quickly and was fine and well packaged - delivered by APC. Second order did eventually arrive and was also fine and well packaged and also I have to say spot on with the accuracy of dimensions which is great. However be warned it was delivered by the notoriously awful DX Delivery company which take several days to contact you with any delivery info until they send you an email and a delivery window between 8am and 6pm - and then they fail to show up BUT they state on their 'tracking' page that they attempted to deliver the package but there was no answer so 'card left' - they did no such thing and my security cameras proved it. This was on a Friday so infuriatingly I could do nothing until the Monday when the same email arrived and in fairness it did then get delivered in that window but it arrived 5 days after the original estimated delivery date from CutMy. But if you're working to to a schedule and value customer service and transparency I'd at least double check that DX aren't going to be the ones delivering it as they are the epitome of lack of professionalism. Shame because the product is good.

I ordered an acrylic clear 4mm panel with a circular cutout for my portable air conditioner vent to block my casement window. Although they sent the incorrect size initially, the made a no quibble replacement. The replacement is the correct size and looks great. It has been difficult to block the casement window when using the air conditioner but this is the perfect solution. The acrylic panel is sturdy. I was afraid it may be flimsy and prone to crack but this was not the case. Great product

Ordered an 18mm black woodgrain desktop and product seems pretty good and as expected. Only gripes...a bit of glue residue on the lipped edges but that did eventually come off. Secondly the corner protection used in the packaging could be improved, some minor impact damage on the desktop but that that was on the underside, so out of sight. I have just built a shaker panel with a shelf for my bedroom using Cutmy. I did buy a very good grab adhesive separately that stuck almost immediately. The fit, the quality and the instructions were absolutely spot-on and I was able to do the entire wall in less than a day by myself. Be sure to measure very very accurately as they cut exactly to your specifications. Also as a little tip, when you are ordering and have put your measurements in, they show you two images of what you’re panelling will look like, make sure to do a screenshot of them as I found it was essential when working out the spacing of some of the panels.
