How to Paint MDF Kitchen Doors

Painting MDF kitchen doors is a straightforward process that allows you to achieve a professional-looking finish. Whether you’re updating your kitchen on a budget or looking for a bespoke colour, following the right steps will ensure a smooth, durable result.

What You'll Need

MDF primer (water-based or solvent-based)
High-quality paint (satin, eggshell, or gloss)
Fine sandpaper (120–240 grit)
Tack cloth or damp microfibre cloth
Paintbrush, roller, or spray gun
Dust sheet or newspaper
Masking tape

Step by Step Guide to Painting MDF Kitchen Doors

Prepare the Surface

Remove any dust, grease, or dirt from the doors using a damp cloth with mild detergent.

Lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (120–180 grit) to smooth out any imperfections.

Wipe away sanding dust using a tack cloth or a damp microfibre cloth.

Apply Primer

MDF is highly absorbent, so applying a primer is essential to create a smooth base for painting.

Use a specialist MDF primer or a general-purpose wood primer. Apply a thin, even coat with a roller or brush.

Allow the primer to dry fully, following the manufacturer’s recommended drying time.

Sand & Prime Again

Once the first coat of primer is dry, lightly sand the surface again with fine sandpaper (180–240 grit) to remove any raised fibres.

Wipe away dust and apply a second coat of primer for the best coverage.

Apply Paint

Use a high-quality paint suitable for wood and cabinetry, such as satin, eggshell, or gloss.

Apply thin, even layers using a brush, roller, or spray gun for a professional finish.

Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next layer, lightly sanding between coats for a super-smooth result.

Finish & Reassemble

Once the final coat is completely dry, check for any imperfections and do any necessary touch-ups.

If desired, apply a clear protective topcoat for extra durability.

Reattach handles and hinges before reinstalling the doors.

I ordered 2 transparent window covers made to measure to cover the window when using my AC unit. These were cut perfectly and exactly to specification, and fit the window exactly. They also sell velcro to attach the cover, which is good and strong but still allows you to easily remove it from the window. Delivery was very quick, especially as this was a made-to-measure product. They were packaged very well too and protected.

Needed some moisture resistant MDF to box in pipework in our shower room. Having measured up I realised it needed cutting more precisely than I could manage. Found Cut My online and what a brilliant service! Ordering was simple - just entered the size of pieces I needed, paid and it was delivered a few days later. Apart from some cutting to fit round pipes it was like making up a kit. And there was virtually no waste. Only negative was the courier who just left the delivery next to our bins by the garden gate and made no effort to come to our front door.
